A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Members and Industry Supporters,

On behalf of EmiratesGBC, I take this opportunity to wish all our members, partners, and industry supporters an Eid Adha Mubarak. This is a time for reflection and taking count of how we can all generate positive impact towards a greener future.

The month of July was an eventful month for us as EmiratesGBC and as a nation.  July 20th specifically went down as the historic launch date of the Emirates Mars Mission “Hope Probe”, the first ever Arab mission to Mars. Under the UAE’s esteemed leadership and the hard work of its dedicated youth, Hope began its 200-day journey to the Red Planet, where the data it will gather will add a new dimension to the human knowledge, helping us better understand the world we live in. A nod to the legacy and dream of our Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed, and his vision for the Emirates to one day find its place in space, the data collected by Hope on Mars’ on the planet’s unique weather system will provide information that will help us tackle climate change here on Earth. This, along with the mission conducted by Hazza Al Mansouri last year when he became the first Emirati astronaut who went to space, have cemented the UAE’s ambitions of becoming one of the global leading nations.  For more thoughts on these historic achievements, I encourage you to read the opinion piece by EmiratesGBC’s Honorary President, Her Highness Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nayhan, who shares her wisdom on how these efforts are contributing to a more sustainable world.

July also saw the successful debut of our Building Retrofit Training Program held online, with participants attending from across the region. Building retrofit is a critical aspect of building sustainability that will support the UAE’s ambitious targets of achieving Net Zero Carbon in new buildings by 2030 and Net Zero Carbon in all the buildings by 2050, and we hope that by broadcasting the training online we not only further enhance EmiratesGBC’s education platform, but also extend the reach of the capacity building program by giving virtual access to participants located here in UAE as well as abroad. With reports warning that the world will likely be more susceptible to catastrophes, such as pandemics, due to ecosystem changes brought on by climate change, here at EmiratesGBC we are more determined than ever to ensure our offerings reach an audience near and far and we bring awareness on sustainability and sustainable growth and development in these uncertain times.

Before closing, I would like to take this chance to remind our esteemed audience that the application window to the year’s MENA Green Building Awards is open, and industry leaders and innovators are encouraged to apply and broadcast their innovative projects, products, or services. It is always exciting to see the new technologies and products the MENA region is capable of pioneering and we take pride in highlighting them.

Lastly, we have a full calendar of events for the remainder of the year, including the Annual Congress and the MENA Green Building Awards Ceremony, so please ensure that you are signed up to the EmiratesGBC mailing list so you receive event invites directly into your inbox.

Sincerely,
Dr. Ali Al Jassem
Chairman
Emirates Green Building Council

Net Zero Centre of Excellence

Our Net Zero Centre of Excellence was launched in 2018 as a think tank and accelerator to advance net zero carbon buildings in the UAE as part of its commitment to World Green Building Council’s Advancing Net Zero Project. We invite you to explore our website to see the work we are doing. We have also summarised our objectives and actions in the EmiratesGBC Snapshot.

One Click LCA Planetary Launch

One Click LCA Planetary has been officially launched and is available in nine languages and covers the ten most carbon-intensive and significant materials categories in construction. It provides both materials efficiency and embodied carbon metrics at once. Through our partnership with Bionova Ltd, the One Click LCA Planetary is available for all UAE companies for free!

Zero Building Certifications

Buildings account for nearly 40% of energy related carbon emissions globally and it is vital to start decarbonisation to limit global warming to below 2°C. By using the International Living Future Institute’s Zero Carbon and Zero Energy Certifications, projects can show their commitment to decarbonisation by limiting both operational and embodied carbon emissions.

If you are working on a net-zero project and would like to learn more about the certification, email us at netzero@emiratesgbc.org and we will be happy to schedule a call to discuss the benefits and process of the certification. The first 10 pilot projects in the UAE that apply to ILFI’s ZE and ZC certifications receive a discounted rate.

Net Zero Buildings Commitment

WorldGBC’s Commitment now has 95 signatories, and you can find the full list of current signatories here. The case study library also showcases industry leaders who have signed the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment: 61 businesses and organisations, 28 cities, and 6 states and regions.

If you would like to join the lines of these pioneering organizations, please contact us at netzero@emiratesgbc.org.

EmiratesGBC Green Hospitality Webinar COVID19 HVAC Guidance for Hotels

EmiratesGBC has been supporting the UAE hospitality industry to improve the sustainability of their properties through certifying green hotels, education & awareness, improving energy & water efficiency and waste management since 2013. We are the National Operator of the Green Key certification, which is an international ecolabel providing a framework for tourism properties to address environmental management and sustainability issues. We have also published benchmarking studies of water and energy usage of hotels providing practical performance metrics for the UAE.

As part of our ongoing outreach to the hospitality sector, EmiratesGBC will be hosting a webinar on August 17th that will discuss the impact of COVID-19 on indoor air quality in hotels and provide practical guidance on safe HVAC operation and procedures.

COVID19 can spread through aerosols which are released by an infected person when coughing, talking, and breathing. The small aerosols remain airborne for several hours. For UAE hotel properties, it is important to implement the correct HVAC procedures in addition to sanitizing procedures and guest social distancing to minimize the risk of COVID19 spreading.

This is an invitation only event for EmiratesGBC members, strategic partners and certified Green Key properties. For more information on how to register contact events@emiratesgbc.org.

Create a Paperless Kitchen at home: Grabbing a disposable paper towel to mop up a mess is really convenient, but in reality, paper towels are a costly and wasteful solution to a problem that can be easily solved by a reusable cloth towel. From a Zero Waste standpoint, keeping an easily accessible drawer full of cloths for kitchen use is a wonderful opportunity to reduce trash from home kitchens.
