A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Members and Industry Supporters,

September 13th marked the official launch of the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, with 38 founding signatories, announced during the renowned Global Climate Action Summit which took place in San Francisco.  As well as leaders from the private sector, the signatories also included cities that have pledged to transition their building stock to net zero carbon in line with the WorldGBC’s timeline. The significance of this milestone for our movement is enormous and EmiratesGBC will continue spearheading our efforts to promote net zero concepts in the region through our Net Zero Centre of Excellence.

I would like to salute EmiratesGBC members Majid Al Futtaim, Cundall and Shaw Contract, three of the co-founding signatories out of 12 businesses from the Green Building Council network, for taking the lead and steering the industry to accelerate its move towards a decarbonised built environment.

Last month also marked the 2018 World Green Building Week, a global campaign initiated by the World Green Building Council. This year’s theme was Green Homes (#HomeGreenHome), and in celebration of the week, EmiratesGBC organised a successful Focus Day highlighting Green Homes in the UAE.  I would like to extend my appreciation to Dubai Chamber, our long-time partners, for hosting us and ensuring the success of the day.

Looking ahead to October 9th, the seventh edition of the Annual EmiratesGBC Congress will be held under the theme “Targeting Zero: a vision for future cities”. The event is a regional first on this topic and we aim to shift the conversation toward net zero and call for increased action so that net-zero eventually becomes the norm for the industry.

With the backing of this year’s venue sponsor, Majid Al Futtaim, I invite your involvement and encourage you to consider supporting this important annual event through sponsorship and registration.

Sincerely,

Saeed Al Abbar

Your Green Building Tooltips for October 2018!

We encourage you to improve your lifestyle, not just for today but for all of 2018, by adopting an EmiratesGBC Green Building Tooltip.  This month’s tip focuses on our homes as we reach the end of our World Green Building Week deliberations under the theme of Green Homes.  When building a new home, it is recommended to allocate space at roof level for future installation of renewable energy equipment, rooftop solar panels. Generating onsite energy using sunlight, through solar Photovoltaic systems is an effective means of reducing demand by meeting part or all of a building’s energy needs.

The EmiratesGBC Green Building Tooltips is a rich online platform serving to further educate the industry and community on simple green building practices. The interactive designs cover three different building typologies, showcasing homeschool and office buildings.  The initiative is powered by BASF and Legrand, EmiratesGBC board members underlining their commitment to promoting sustainability, and is supported by Taqati whose mission is tied to achieving Dubai’s sustainability goals.

We urge you to visit the Green Building Tooltips on our website to test out this valuable tool and pursue a greener lifestyle whether it be at home, school or the office.

Green Key Spotlight

The 2018 Green Key National Operators Meeting was held last month in Tallinn, Estonia where 33 of the 42 Green Key operators came together to discuss recent developments with the eco-label and review proposed updates to the certification criteria.  As the national operator in the UAE, Emirates Green Building Council was there to exchange best practice and share the successes of UAE’s green hotels.  During the meetings, we heard from Radisson Group and their commitment to the Green Key certification and also learned more about the Drinkable Air technology which supports hotels to provide sustainable drinking water to guests.

Green Key provides a well-proven framework for establishments to operate with a high standard of environmental management on sustainability issues, and the national operators meeting offered time for operators to collectively focus on the program’s growth, its strength, and future enhancements, thus ensuring Green Key’s positive impact across tourism industries globally.

Ras Al Khaimah’s Pioneering Hotel Recycling Initiative Saves 130 Tonnes Of Recyclable Waste

The Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Green Hotel scheme has recorded a 120% increase in the amount of recyclable waste that is being diverted from landfill each month since it was launched just over two years ago. The environmental initiative, which was introduced in March 2016 by Ras Al Khaimah’s Waste Management Agency (WMA), has resulted in 130 tonnes of waste materials being sorted and separated at source for recycling each month – up from an initial 60 tonnes per month. WMA staff collect plastic, glass, cardboard, electronics and other recyclable waste from 26 hotels located throughout the UAE’s northernmost emirate. Each hotel has more than 100 rooms. Earlier this year, WMA set each of the properties participating in the Ras Al Khaimah Green Hotel scheme the goal of sorting and separating 30% of all recyclable rubbish and food waste. As of September, 18 hotels have either reached or exceed this target, some hotels having and impressive waste diversion rate of 70%. The RAK Green Hotel scheme is part of the emirate’s drive to reach the 2021 UAE National Target of diverting 75% of all recyclable waste from landfill and to reduce the amount of waste produced by each resident to just 1.5kg each day down from the current nationwide average of 2.7kg. The Government of Ras Al Khaimah’s long-term goal is to help every hotel in the emirate reach 100% sustainability to help promote traditional tourism and to boost the development of RAK’s growing eco-tourism sector.
