A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Valued EmiratesGBC Members

As we reflect on the past month, it’s evident that our team at Emirates Green Building Council has been tirelessly dedicated to preparing for the much-anticipated MENA Green Building Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner. This significant event serves as a platform to acknowledge the sustainable projects and companies at the forefront of the sustainability movement. It’s heartening to witness the tremendous progress and commitment displayed by our members in shaping a more environmentally conscious future.

Moreover, ss we gear up for COP28, the largest climate summit, we find ourselves immersed in preparations for this critical global event. It is an opportunity for us to amplify our efforts and contribute to the international discourse on sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. Our active engagement in this arena will undoubtedly propel us towards a more sustainable and resilient future.

On another note, it brings me immense joy to observe an increasing number of hotels recognizing the importance of sustainability. Many are now actively seeking the prestigious Green Key certificates, a distinguished standard of excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable operations within the tourism industry. As the national operator for the United Arab Emirates under the esteemed Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), our role becomes increasingly pivotal in advocating for and promoting sustainable practices within the hospitality sector.

Let us continue to forge ahead with our collective commitment to sustainability and environmental management. Your unwavering dedication and support are what drive us forward in our mission to create a greener and more sustainable world for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ali Al Jassim

Chairman, Emirates Green Building Council

Driving Sustainability: Innovations, Commitment, and Collective Responsibility in Sustainable Construction

Ruth Waugh

General Manager

Twintec Middle East Industrial Flooring LLC

Innovation and knowledge are key drivers of environmental sustainability but also is action and a commitment to follow through on corporate statements.

As individuals and organisations, we all have a responsibility to sustainable construction. There is no magic wand or the ability to go back in time and do things differently, but what we can do collectively is work towards reducing the impact of our business operations on the world we live in for the future  generations.

There isn’t time to wait for legislation or codes to insist on sustainable design practices and whilst we welcomes moves towards defined embodied carbon targets in construction, Twintec is not prepared to wait.  We  embrace wholehearted designing & constructing ECO Freeplan® and ECO ULTIMATE floor slabs globally incorporating high tensile steel fibres repurposed from the steel chord in end of life of tyres and used as an alternative to steel rebar in concrete floor slab designs.

Building a Greener Workplace

Promoting sustainability in the workplace involves both cost reduction and a collective responsibility:

  • Encourage the use of reusable water bottles and coffee mugs to reduce single-use plastic waste.
  • Implement energy-efficient practices, such as turning off lights and electronic devices when not in use, and utilizing natural light whenever possible.
  • Introduce recycling bins for paper, plastic, and other recyclable materials to promote a culture of sustainability within the office.
  • Opt for eco-friendly office supplies, such as recycled paper, refillable ink cartridges, and sustainable stationery.
  • Invest in energy-efficient appliances and equipment to decrease energy consumption and lower overall operating costs.
  • Incorporate greenery into the office space by adding plants that can improve air quality and contribute to a healthier work environment.
