A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Members and Industry Supporters,

If you are a resident in the UAE, you may have noted the consistent collective effort showcased by the UAE leadership, government and its sub agencies. We are witnessing high-level cooperation informing nationwide resilience for the present and future betterment of this country and its residents. This administrative efficiency sets a positive precedent for not only the UAE and region, but the world.
As the lockdown situation resumes globally, industries and businesses are largely adapting to the situation, but for many the global pandemic has brought about economic and social difficulties. We hope and pray that the companies and people who have been affected by this see the time pass quickly with a positive change in circumstances.

At EmiratesGBC, we stand by ready to support our members, partners and the wider industry during this time. The Council has been increasing its online content that provides expert technical knowledge, new learning opportunities and best practice case studies. During the month of May, our audience actively tuned in to a string of webinars, presenting on the topics of IAQ best practices, LEED Zero Certification, and Energy Modelling for Net Zero buildings.

As more people are getting accustomed to online learning, we have remained committed to this service by further enhancing our online education platform with a new entry: For the first time, the Building Retrofit Training Program will be offered online to the UAE and a wider regional audience. The Advanced Course culminates with a Building Retrofit Specialist certificate and provides a one of a kind opportunity for professionals to upgrade their credentials. Be sure to register and gain this industry advantage.

The #EGBCWebinars series continues for the month of June with another lineup of informative and relevant topics that enable crucial knowledge exchange. In June, EmiratesGBC Members and Partners will learn about the USGBC’s True Waste certification process; Biononva Planetary: a new online tool that enables companies to calculate their embodied carbon, and a workshop on optimizing load and ventilation rates for office buildings.
In solidarity with the world overcoming this pandemic, EmiratesGBC will continue to offer its online platform to the local and global community and we look forward to seeing you benefit from these events.

Lastly, on behalf of EmiratesGBC I wish all our members, partners, and industry supporters a belated Eid Mubarak and a safe month ahead.

Sincerely,
Dr. Ali Al Jassim

Zero Building Certifications

According to the 2019 Making the Case for Building to Zero Carbon report, Zero Carbon Buildings can be achieved with a positive financial return of 1% over a 25-year life-cycle and require a modest 8% capital cost premium. Building to Zero allows assets to remain resilient and increase in value over time. The International Living Future Institute’s Zero Carbon and Zero Energy Certifications, can be used to verify the design of high performance, climate-positive buildings and help projects account for both operational and embodied carbon.
If you are working on a net-zero project and would like to learn more about the certification, email us at netzero@emiratesgbc.org and we will be happy to schedule a call to discuss the benefits and process of the certification. The first 10 pilot projects in the UAE that apply to ILFI’s ZE and ZC certifications receive a discounted rate.

Net Zero Buildings Commitment

WorldGBC’s Commitment to becoming operationally Net Zero, has grown to 82 signatories, and you can find the full list of current signatories here. The case study library also showcases industry leaders who have signed up for the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment: 48 businesses and organizations, 28 cities, and 6 states and regions.
EmiratesGBC is proud to announce that several members have signed on and we hosted a knowledge sharing webinar, where they shared their experiences. You can watch the webinar recording here.

EmiratesGBC In the News

Gulf states must address poor indoor air quality, report says

Incense burning and hookah smoking is reducing air quality inside homes and malls in the Gulf, a study has found. The new research said pollution caused by construction was also penetrating buildings in the region. Experts noted indoor air quality was particularly important in the Middle East given high temperatures tended to mean people spent longer inside.
The study warned long-term exposure to poor air quality could result in respiratory disease and cancer. Farah Yassine, vice-chairperson of the Emirates Green Building Council, which promotes the development of more environmentally friendly buildings, said that incense burning was “deeply rooted” in UAE culture. [Read More].

Post COVID-19, cities should revive resilience strategies – EGBC official

Urban planners need to adapt more rapid and holistic approach for ‘city resilience’ strategies in the post COVID-19 world, according to the Emirates Green Building Council (EGBC).

“The current pandemic, a major shock to the world, opened everyone’s eyes towards urban planning and resilience, [and] that deserves more weightage in the post pandemic world”, said Huda Shaka, Secretary to the Board, EGBC and Associate Director of Urban Planning at Arup, in an interview with Zawya Projects.

She said the post COVID-19 world will see a revival of interest in the idea of ‘city resilience’, that effectively responds to sudden shocks like economic crisis, infrastructure failure, droughts, heat waves, flash floods, pandemics and long-term stresses like depleting water resources, migration or employment opportunities. [Read More].
