A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Members and Industry Supporters,

As the year comes to an end, the EmiratesGBC looks back with pride on its accomplishments over the past year in helping to drive sustainability of the built environment of the UAE.  I hope that each of our members and partners were able to benefit from the many of programs, publications and initiatives that were carried out in 2015, and I thank you all for the positive contributions made to the Council and to the UAE.

Last month I had the privilege to attend the COP21 climate change summit in Paris as part of the UAE delegation. It was clear from the series of meetings and workshops at the conference that buildings and cities have a pivotal role in tackling climate change. We, as EmiratesGBC, look forward to continuing to play an active role in supporting the UAE in its climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies as the historic Paris Agreement, which seeks to keep global warming “well below” 2 degrees Celsius, takes effect.

Last month we also hosted our Annual General Meeting wherein EmiratesGBC had the opportunity to share its future plans and projects for 2016. Members had the opportunity to voice their opinions and provide input to the future direction of the EmiratesGBC.  The discussions held were extremely fruitful and we certainly value the input provided by those members that were able to attend, and we look forward to delivering on these suggestions in the new year.

Following the strong response to the previous editions of the EmiratesGBC Annual Awards, the 2016 EmiratesGBC Awards were also launched in December, with the Awards Gala taking place in May 2016. The awards will highlight and celebrate the best practices in sustainable building, as well as provide a knowledge-sharing platform to catalyse the widespread adoption of innovative approaches within the industry. Nominations are now open and the deadline to submit is 18th February 2016. Visit the Awards website for more information to apply.

I once again thank you all for your contributions to the EmiratesGBC in 2015 and look forward to the exciting opportunities that the new year holds.

I wish you all a happy and successful 2016.

Best regards,

Saeed Al Abbar
Chairman

Technical Workshops: 2015 and December Recap and Looking Forward to the New Year

The year 2015 for EmiratesGBC marked an extraordinary line-up of popular topics that were well received by attending members and partners. Over the past year, EmiratesGBC Technical Workshops delved into a range of topics including lighting technicalities, commercial refurbishment, green facility management, BIPV technology, green concrete, ESCO technologies, and HVAC optimization methods, among others.

Last month, an enlightening workshop addressed the various software used for successful building energy retrofit and post-occupancy energy management projects. Participants gained perspective on a range of versatile and ground-breaking software that have yet to permeate the UAE market, despite the energy efficiency potential within the country.

A Summary Brief compiling the discussion points from all 2015 Technical Workshops will be uploaded on the website in a few weeks and shared with the industry.  We hope the Brief will serve as a valuable reference.

For this new year, the first Technical Workshop will be held at EmiratesGBC office on January 12th from 8:30am to 10:30am. The topic will discuss External Thermal Comfort. To register, please email technicalworkshops@emiratesgbc.org.

Technical Workshops are open to EmiratesGBC members and partners only and subject to limited seating. Please be sure to register your participation early.

MENA Green Building Council (GBC) Network

In 2015, the MENA GBC Network collectively focused discussions and activities around the theme of “sustainable affordable housing”, concluding the year with a seminar organized alongside The Big 5 exhibition in Dubai in November. A  joint document is currently under preparation to address the topic from each GBC’s perspective including current situation, challenges and opportunities in the region.

The next topic to be commonly addressed in 2016 is “green schools”, which aligns with areas identified as critical in the UAE and the region, including such focus areas as the positive impacts of healthy IAQ and indoor comfort on cognitive performance. We will keep you posted during the year on the MENA Network’s progress.  In the meantime, however, do not hesitate to contact us on info@emiratesgbc.org for more information.

The MENA GBC Network represents 15 GBCs within the World Green Building Council regionally and ensures shared knowledge on programs, projects, and policies and aims to capture the diversity of challenges and solutions while taking into account the uniqueness of climatic or cultural conditions.
