A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Members and Industry Supporters,

May 1st marked another successful cycle of our Annual EmiratesGBC Congress, in its eighth edition and under the theme ‘Circling in on Zero: Circular Economy in the Built Environment’. We were honoured to have Her Highness Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, CEO of Alliances for Global Sustainability, deliver the opening address and underscore the importance of the work we are conducting toward sustainable development in the UAE.  We also had the pleasure of hosting Lisa Bate, Chairperson of the World Green Building Council, who provided Congress delegates with an overview of the role of the built environment in achieving global sustainability aspirations as well as the urgency of immediate and concerted action to transition towards a Circular Economy.  It is important that we carry the momentum of the Congress forward and take the responsibility of engraining sustainable principles in our daily and professional lives.

I would like to thank all who attended and supported this pivotal dialogue, with a special thank you to our official government partners, Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, and RAS Al Khaimah Municipality. The Congress would also not have been possible without the continued and unwavering support of our Platinum Partner, Majid Al Futtaim, as well as Jotun, our Gold Sponsor.  We are also grateful for the expertise and support provided by our partner supporting associations, including,  The Clean Energy Business Council, Emirates Environmental Group, Emirates Nature-WWF, GBCI, Middle East Facility Management Association (MEFMA), and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)

As we wind down from last week’s flagship event activities, and we enter the holy month of Ramadan, I would like to extend my warm greetings and wish a Ramadan Mubarak to all.

Looking ahead, we invite our industry pioneers to apply for the Annual MENA Green Building Awards, this year with a new category Zero Building/Zero Building Design of the Year”, we are eager to see and celebrate the implementation of net zero concepts in the region as we work together to accelerate the adoption of Circular Economy principles in the built environment.

Net Zero Centre of Excellence: Steps toward Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment

The EmiratesGBC Net Zero Centre of Excellence was established as a think-tank and accelerator to provide an important platform for government, academia and the private sector to learn and share knowledge on how to advance net zero carbon buildings in the UAE.

This year, we are focusing on market transition and leadership under the Net Zero Centre of Excellence programme.  Our recently launched partnership with the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), EmiratesGBC ILFI will work toward the development of ILFI’s Zero Energy (ZE) and Zero Carbon (ZC) Certifications that will be adapted for the UAE market with the Council acting as the exclusive auditor of the two certifications in UAE. The partnership with ILFI delivers on the objectives of the Centre of Excellence to engage as many entities as possible in this global movement toward net zero.

EmiratesGBC has provided feedback to ILFI addressing the Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Embodied Carbon requirements of the ZE and ZC certifications, on the specific requirements which would act as barriers to the successful uptake of the certifications in the market.

Thank you to all the respondents who filled out the surveys we created! Your participation is greatly appreciated and supported us in identifying market readiness for these certifications.

If you are working on a net-zero energy project,  please email us at netzero@emiratesgbc.org, the first 10 pilot projects in the UAE that apply to ILFI’s ZE and ZC certifications will receive a 50% discount.

We encourage our members and partners to join the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment in 2019 as we continue to advocate for regional players to join this highly effective mission toward worldwide decarbonisation. If interested, please email us at netzero@emiratesgbc.org.

Building Efficiency Accelerator (BEA) Benchmarking Report – What’s Next?

Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC) launched the Building Efficiency Accelerator (BEA) Project Report on January 10th .  In partnership with Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, EmiratesGBC carried the study as the selected demonstration project, benchmarking the energy and water performance of Dubai hotels, schools, and malls, as part of Dubai’s commitment to the BEA.

As this month’s technical workshop looked at the Indoor Air Quality and Acoustics in schools, we would also like to highlight the BEA Report energy and water benchmarking results for private schools in Dubai. The results showed that:

  • A median school in Dubai consumes 134 kWh/m2/year of energy and 852 litres/m2/year of water.
  • The best performing schools consume 61% less energy and 84% less water compared to the worst performers
  • New schools are likely to consume more energy and water per unit area.

EmiratesGBC’s BEA project team assessed the energy and water performance of existing buildings against similar buildings within the same typology as part of the study. A total of 121 properties, including 85 hotels, 27 schools, and 9 malls, submitted data on their energy and water use.

As a sign of commitment and appreciation, EmiratesGBC has sent out tailored scorecards to the schools, hotels, and malls that participated in the BEA Benchmarking Report. The scorecards highlight the performance of the properties and support them in deciding where urgent action is needed to increase efficiency and building performance.

Academy Feature of the Month

Following from our 8th Annual Congress and its theme of a Circular Economy in the Built Environment, this month we look at IEA’s Material efficiency in clean energy transitions, which examines the potential for material efficiency and the resulting energy and emissions impact for key energy-intensive materials: steel, cement, and aluminium. It includes deep dives on the buildings construction and vehicles value chains and outlines key policy and stakeholder actions to improve material efficiency.

The report reveals that at the current Reference Technology Scenario material demand increases to over 30% by 2060 above 2017 levels for both steel and cement. However, in the Clean Technology Scenario, material demand reductions can lower CO2 emissions from buildings steel and cement use by 10% (10 gigatonnes [Gt]) cumulatively from 2017 to 2060.
