A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Members and Industry Supporters,

July continued to be a busy month for the Council as we continue to drive initiatives to promote a sustainable built environment.  This past month saw temperatures in Europe hit record levels twice within a month, where in some parts of Europe, temperatures were recorded hotter than here in the UAE, during our peak summer.  Experts have attributed these events to climate change, and this further enforces the need for us to take drastic and far reaching action to curb carbon emissions and transition to a sustainable economy.  Against this backdrop, I shared some thoughts with The National on strategies to naturally cool cities.

I would like to invite our industry leaders to apply for the Annual MENA Green Building Awards.  We have extended the application deadline until the 10th of August, to allow for further participation and for you to pronounce your achievements in our growing industry.  Endorsed by the World Green Building Council and in partnership with six MENA Green Building Councils, the awards have swiftly established themselves as the regional model for celebrating successes and scaling up best practices in the MENA built environment.

We look forward to hosting you on Wednesday 16th October for an evening of celebration and networking,  as we announce the winners of the 2019 MENA Green Building Awards.

The Council continues to articulate its presence in the UAE and the region as a platform for sharing knowledge and collaboration. Last month and for the first time we hosted a technical workshop on 3D Concrete Buildings and their contribution to sustainability in the built environment.  The successful workshop created a positive sentiment about the innovative direction and shift the industry is undergoing.  Looking ahead, we have a series of trainings being prepared under our Net Zero Centre of Excellence, in addition to a series of site tours, demonstrating in real time the efforts which our industry leaders have been taking to prove that green buildings are achievable and here to stay.

I encourage you to please take the time to visit the EmiratesGBC website for more details on all our events and programs for 2019.

Sincerely,

Saeed Al Abbar

Green Key

EmiratesGBC would like to congratulate Address Downtown, Address Montgomerie, Grand Millenium Al Wahda, and Raffles Dubai on becoming new Green Key certified hotels. Well done!

There are now 41 properties certified in the UAE, with the number set to increase in the coming months.

A Green Key certified camp in Croatia, Kamp Kovačine, held an Eco-Theatre last year about plastics, micro plastics, clean and dirty beaches. The campsite employees dressed as dolphins, birds, flowers, and other species that plastic bags are a hazard to, and the children, in turn, had the opportunity to save them and the environment using “decision cards”. The exercise helped the attending children become aware of how their actions impacted the environment and what they can do to save it. It also aided them to identify with nature and understand what plastic pollution really is and its contributions to climate change.

Hotels and other tourism properties can engage the children visiting them in similar activities to make sure that they are doing their part in educating the coming generations and empowering them to make a change.

If you are a developer, hotelier, or own a restaurant or a café and you are interested in applying for the Green Key Certification, please email us at greenkey@emiratesgbc.org.

Green Building Councils

Become a WGBW 2019 Campaign Ambassador

World Green Building Week, a global awareness campaign to elevate the need for buildings that help us reduce our impact on the planet and climate change, is just around the corner 23-29 Sept 2019.

We at EmiratesGBC are part of a global green building movement which covers 70 countries and 37,000 members.  Collectively we are committed to reducing the building and construction sector’s CO2 emissions to reach net zero by 2050: to ultimately help limit global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Building Life

This year the World Green Building Week campaign theme is Building Life: we’re aiming to raise greater awareness of the carbon emissions from all stages of a building’s lifecycle. Currently, building and construction together account for 39% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. Operational emissions from buildings account for 28% overall, while the remaining 11% are attributed to embodied carbon emissions, the carbon that is released during material manufacturing and the construction and demolition process.

Therefore, through the Building Life campaign we are encouraging new practices and new ways of thinking to take action towards reducing carbon emissions from buildings.

Get involved

Are you interested in becoming a Campaign Ambassador. Last year, our campaign reached over 155 million people and sparked nearly 300 grassroots events and activities across the world.

This year, we’re Building Life and exploring how we can create a green, healthy and climate resilient built environment for all – and we’d love you to join us.

We’d be so grateful for your support here are a few suggestions for how you could get involved in this year’s campaign:

  • Social media posts – provide 1-3 exclusive quotes about the campaign and the importance of Building Life
  • Video – provide a video message expressing your support for World Green Building Week
  • Blog – author a thought piece on what your company is doing to address the carbon emissions from all stages of a building’s lifecycle
  • Make a Building Life pledge during World Green Building Week

The Building Retrofit Porgramme prepares and provides industry professionals with the skills to implement retrofit projects in the region.

The Building Retrofit Training Courses are open for registeration and we look forward to certifying our next wave of Building Retrofit Specialists. The Building Retrofit Training Program runs throughout the year – register today to secure your place on an upcoming course.

The training program teaches the fundamentals of Building Retrofit specific for the Middle East region and offers the opportunity to become an EmiratesGBC certified Building Retrofit Specialist after successful completion of the Advanced course and examination. Click here to read more about why retrofitting existing built environments in the UAE is crucial for meeting national and global carbon emission target.

The program is in partnership with Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) and offers two levels of training:

  • Advanced Building Retrofit Training Course: This two-day course is perfect for engineers and technical experts with prior experience or currently undertaking retrofit projects who wish to enhance and streamline their knowledge of retrofit principles and methods. Participants of the course will undertake an examination which will allow them to become an EmiratesGBC certified Building Retrofit Specialist.
  • Introductory Building Retrofit Training: For non-technical professionals looking for an overview of Building Retrofit methods. Led by expert facilitators, this one-day course provides knowledge of sustainability to industry professionals looking to understand the fundamentals of building retrofit.

Further information about the courses and eligibility guidelines can be found on the website.  We invite you to visit the Building Retrofit Training webpage to register. EmiratesGBC can also schedule in-house training for groups of 10 or more, please contact events@emiratesgbc.org to request a proposal. EmiratesGBC members and partners will receive a 20% discount off the registration fees.

Hear what some of our previous participants had to say about the course:

‘I took BRT because I am a non-technical professional entering the retrofit sector in Dubai, working on demand side management. This course gave me a solid overview and understanding of building/villa/structure from a retrofit perspective and the current legislation and trends in Dubai.’

‘I would like to personally thank EGBC for introducing the BRT as it became really a good reinforcement to tackle the issues concerning the built environment especially the existing buildings. Truly, if majority of the building professionals, owners and the building occupants are aware of the impact of buildings, EGBC’s launching of the certification for Building Retrofit specialists will paved the way to transforming buildings and the built environment in general as high performing and low to zero carbon places on earth.’
