UAE Introduces Transformative Regulatory Framework for Safety-Critical Reinforcing Steels
Rolling out a new regulatory regime for safety-critical reinforcing steels entering the UAE’s construction market heralds a ‘transformative’ step towards digital sustainability, according to CARES – the world’s leading steel certification authority.
Working closely with policymakers at the UAE’s Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), the Certification Authority for Reinforcing Steels helped bring product traceability to the routes these materials take from source to site. This enables third-party digital assurance, boosting stakeholder confidence.
Manufacturers joined workshops to shape the regulations enacted in the new Emirates Conformity Assessment Scheme (ECAS). “Through the adoption of digital assurance, the UAE now sets the pace internationally” said CARES’ CEO Lee Brankley. Product provenance is critical for project confidence, he added.
The new UAE regulations were mandated as CARES also strengthened ties with manufacturers through its Sustainable Constructional Steel scheme, driving continuous improvement in environmental stewardship

Mays Kayed
Sustainability Manager – AlDar
- 1. Who You Are:
- Beyond your professional role, tell us a bit about yourself. What drives and inspires you personally? Whether it’s hobbies, interests, or values, we’d love to learn more about the person behind the professional achievements.
I’m Mays Kayed, Sustainability Manager at Aldar Properties, but beyond work, I’m someone who values connection, creativity, and curiosity, and I cherish time spent with family and loved ones – whether it’s sharing laughs or diving into playful art and craft projects. Simple joys like hiking in nature, getting lost in a good book, or exploring new hobbies keep me inspired. These passions shape my perspective, reminding me that true progress comes from caring for both people and the planet.
2. Career Journey and Achievements:
-
-
- Can you share a brief overview of your career journey in the field of sustainability? What achievements or projects are you most proud of in advancing sustainable practices?
I studied architectural design, and after a year in the field, I shifted my focus to sustainability to better understand how to create spaces and solutions that enhance quality of life. This shift reflected my belief in the power of design to build resilient communities and foster well-being. My journey led me to work with leading developers, helping them create value in the built environment through sustainable and human-centric design. I’m especially proud of contributing to two landmark projects: Athlon by Aldar, a 7-time award-winning project and the first LEED for Cities & Communities platinum-certified design and planning project in the UAE, and the Sustainable City in Abu Dhabi, which achieved Pearl 5 certification for its innovative approach to sustainable urban living.
3. Challenges and Triumphs:
-
-
- As a woman in the sustainability sector, have you faced any specific challenges, and how did you overcome them? On the flip side, what triumphs or successes have been particularly meaningful in your career?
Working in sustainability comes with its own set of challenges—ones that often go beyond the question of being a woman in the field. I’m fortunate that my journey has been met with respect and support, but sustainability itself can mean navigating tricky waters, like proving that sustainable solutions aren’t just “nice to have” but essential. Balancing bold ideas with tight budgets has tested me, but it’s in those challenges that innovation truly thrives. My favourite triumphs? Turning a hesitant “maybe” into a confident “wow” and getting entire teams to rally around a shared vision.
4. Impact and Advice:
-
-
- How do you see your role contributing to the broader goals of sustainability? Additionally, what advice would you offer to other women aspiring to make a difference in the field of sustainability?
I see my role as the link between vision and action, turning innovative ideas into real-world solutions that improve lives and protect the planet for future generations. To women looking to make an impact in sustainability, my advice is simple: stay consistent, even when progress feels slow. Celebrate small victories to keep yourself motivated and always keep the bigger goal in mind. Surround yourself with a supportive network, and don’t hesitate to speak up your ideas and voice have the power to drive meaningful change.
