A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Esteemed EmiratesGBC Members,

I’m sending you a warm hello as we kick off a new phase after the summer break. We’re all set to dive into a season of action and commitment for our common goal of sustainability.

Our dedicated members are back from their well-deserved summer break, and that means we’re starting an exciting journey. We’ve got a bunch of upcoming events on the horizon that will shape our sustainability efforts throughout this year. From the big World Green Building Week to the important global talks at COP28, our calendar is packed with events that can make the world better.

As we gear up for these big events, the timing couldn’t be better. Just as schools start up again and campuses come alive, the ministry of education has issued a circular urging institutes of higher education in the country to finish all exams of the fall 2023 early so that young people can join in COP28. This global event is important for our youth, and it shows how much our country values their voices and perspectives in shaping our future.

I’m proud to let you know about the progress we’ve made in getting ready for these events. Our team has been working super hard, driven by your passion and our shared mission. We want every event we put together to be a source of knowledge, new ideas, and real changes. This journey isn’t just about the buildings we construct; it’s about creating a foundation for a greener, more sustainable future that will benefit generations to come.

May this chapter of our journey be marked by resounding success, profound impact, and lasting change.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ali Al Jassim

Chairman, Emirates Green Building Council

Water Reuse within the Built Environment – A circular approach for Sustainable wastewater management through the recovery of wastewater

Alicia Dauth

Associate Environmental Consultant

MIEMA, CEnv

AESG

We take water for granted; it’s undervalued, and we haven’t been doing a good job looking after it, we pollute it, we overuse it, and we waste it. Our wastewater is also undervalued. Currently 54% of the population lives in built up environments (and growing) & as the population  grows so does the need for water, a scarce resource, therefore we need to search for alternative water resources.

We can look at wastewater to fill the role of non-potable water (& hopefully at some point for potable purposes). WW has value& should not be discarded as a waste – rather considered as a resource for reuse – wastewater is an opportunity.

Wastewater is a valuable resource; it’s a high value commodity & the built environment has plenty of it available. Thus, creating a circular approach for water – what goes in stays in, & what stays onsite can become an alternative source of water to meet the needs of a built environment such as irrigation, toilet flushing & other non-potable water essentials.

Wastewater from greywater systems can be recovered from existing/planned built environments, from points such as air conditioner condensate, cooling tower blow down water, runoff irrigation water & swimming pool backwash operation water.
