A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Valued EmiratesGBC Members

It’s time to look back at another remarkable month that was packed with energy, engagement, and inspiring events. Just like the changing leaves, our efforts are evolving and thriving, and I’m excited to share the highlights with you.

Throughout September, we continued our journey towards a more sustainable future with active participation from members of the MENA Regional Network and the World Green Building Council. One of the standout moments was World Green Building Week, where Emirates Green Building Council once again took the lead in organizing and co-organizing numerous events. These gatherings brought together a diverse array of stakeholders, our valued members, and industry experts. It was a time to celebrate our collective commitment to sustainability and share innovative ideas that will shape the future of green building practices.

Additionally, our cutting-edge study to check the quality of indoor environments in schools gained more traction. This project, done hand in hand with our dedicated members, shows how much we care about creating healthier and more sustainable learning spaces for the students of tomorrow.

And speaking of milestones, the judging period for the MENA Green Building Awards has officially concluded. Now, our anticipation grows as we eagerly await the announcement of the shortlist. These awards serve as a guiding light, illuminating the incredible dedication and achievements of those who champion sustainability and green excellence in our region.

Our journey towards a greener, more sustainable world is ongoing, and each step forward brings us closer to our goals.

Thank you for your support and commitment to the Emirates Green Building Council. Together, let’s make October another month filled with impactful initiatives and positive change.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ali Al Jassim

Chairman, Emirates Green Building Council

Digital twins and Industry 5.0 aim to optimize manufacturing processes by leveraging cutting-edge
technology. Industry 5.0 is the next phase in the industrial evolution and emphasizes collaboration
between humans and machines, while digital twins are virtual representations of physical assets or
processes, and they can be used to simulate, analyze and optimize the performance of a building
throughout its lifecycle [1]. For example, with a digital twin, it is possible to optimize the design and
operation of a building to reduce energy consumption, improve indoor air quality, and minimize waste

Water Reuse within the Built Environment – A circular approach for Sustainable wastewater management through the recovery of wastewater

Katharina Runov

Senior Marketing Manager

PolyPipe – Middle East

The built environment has tirelessly worked over three decades on reducing energy consumption. Buzzwords like ‘net-zero emissions’ have become commonplace. However, we’re realizing our current approach isn’t fully addressing the issue. The future looks at net-positive design, which goes beyond just doing no harm—it actively repairs ecological damage and views buildings as eco-assets. Key strategies encompass a circular economy, emphasizing building longevity and material re-use, and a thrust on public health with enhanced drainage systems. Urban resilience, coping with climate challenges like droughts and floods, and blue-green roofs, infusing nature in urban design, are also vital. While initial investments in net-positive might be higher, the long-term environmental and financial benefits are clear and compelling.
