A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear EmiratesGBC Members and Partners,

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate my beloved nation on its great accomplishments in its 51st National Day. Our great father Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan once said “We pay the utmost care and attention to our environment for it is an integral part of the country, our history, and our heritage. Our forefathers and our ancestors lived in this land and coexisted with its environment, on land and at sea, and instinctively realized the need to preserve it.” His words resonate in our leaders’ hearts and in our nation’s actions and we can see, as years progress, that our country is steadily transforming into a more sustainable nation.

Recently in COP 27, we have seen several action plans being endorsed by our nation. For example, the UAE unveiled its National Net Zero by 2050 pathway where several measures such as increasing the share of clean energy, scaling up the use of clean electricity and the reduction of fossil fuels will be taken. Moreover, at our Council, we have also seen great achievements such as the MENA 2022 Green Building Awards where several regional projects reflected the collective efforts and commitments the MENA region is putting towards an ambitious sustainable future. I want to congratulate our winners and those shortlisted and I would also like to extend my gratitude to our platinum sponsor Majid Al Futaim, and our silver sponsor, Linxion Bartec, Dubai, for their support.

As the year comes to an end, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to all EmiratesGBC’s members for your commitment and support. Emirates Green Building Council promises to continue to promote sustainability especially in the built environment and to always thrive to be the beacon for sustainable knowledge in line with our great Nation, aspiring to achieve sustainable economic, social, and environmental societies.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ali Al Jassim

Chairman

Emirates Green Building Council

Several cities across the UAE have banned single-use plastic bags from their stores across the UAE since July 2022, heading towards the total ban on disposable bags in the UAE by January 2024. We have all been adjusting to the change and here are few tips that will ensure you do not forget your bag the next time you go shopping!

  1. Keep one or two reusable bags in your car and use a sticky note on your dashboard to remind you about the bags.
  2. Keep your reusable bags stored in an easy to notice space in your house so that you remember to take them before you go out.
  3. When doing your shopping list, put a remined to take the bags on your phone so the alarm would go on before you attempt to leave.
  4. Put a reminder note on your door or fridge to remember to take the disposable bags.
  5. Remember to clean, wash and wipe your reusable bags frequently, following the bag’s care instruction tag.
  6. Air dry your bags so that they maintain a fresh smell.
  7. Allocate specific bags for dairy, raw meat and for dry products.
