A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Members and Industry Supporters,

I would like to begin by wishing a Ramadan Kareem to all our Members, Partners and Supporters in the UAE and MENA Region.

The month of May saw the launch of another key strategic partnership for the Emirates Green Building Council with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Ras Al Khaimah Municipality.  This partnership was sealed in an official signing ceremony that took place on May 9th.  With sustainability being a driving force for the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, as demonstrated by the commitment and leadership of His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, EmiratesGBC is confident that our partnership with Ras Al Khaimah Municipality will support further collaboration and encourage a unified national approach toward sustainability, while supporting Ras Al Khaimah in meeting its growth demands.

May 9th also marked the Annual MENA Green Building Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner. This year’s Awards program was the largest and most successful to date and I was honoured to host our members and regional partners in celebrating industry successes for the UAE and MENA region.  Congratulations to all the 2018 winners, shortlisted organisations and individuals who have defined a new benchmark for the industry and have set the bar higher for the region.  I look forward to working with all shortlisted organisations in order to disseminate the best practice and knowledge exemplified in the award submissions to the wider industry.  I would like to extend the Council’s sincere appreciation to our corporate members Majid Al Futtaim, Platinum Sponsor and Jotun Ltd, Gold Sponsor for their support in this year’s Awards.  The 2018 MENA Green Building Awards were endorsed by WorldGBC and held in partnership with six MENA Green Building Councils.

We are now busy turning our focus to the second flagship event of the year, the EmiratesGBC Annual Congress.  I invite your involvement and encourage you to consider supporting this important event through sponsorship and participation.  The official announcement of the 2018 EmiratesGBC Congress and its theme will be released early this month.

Looking ahead, I encourage you to take the time to visit the EmiratesGBC website for more details on our programs and events in order to find out how you can become actively engaged in driving the green building movement in the UAE

Sincerely,

Saeed Al Abbar

We were joined by participants, members, partners and stakeholders to celebrate success and best practice within the industry. The quality of the applications was exceptionally high this year and all the shortlisted applicants should be applauded.

The Awards Ceremony opened with welcoming addresses from Saeed Al Abbar, EmiratesGBC Chair, Mohammad Asfour, Regional Manager of WorldGBC MENA Network, and Ibrahim Al Zu’bi, CSO Majid Al Futtaim, who recognised the contribution of applicant organisations and the importance of the awards to raising awareness and promoting excellence in the industry.

Academy Feature of the Month

This month we look at a recent study conducted on the carbon footprint created by global tourism and published in the Nature Climate Change Journal.  The study shows that the carbon footprint is much higher than previous estimates and that it accounts for about 8 percent of global carbon emissions and is four times larger than previously estimated. Researchers from the University of Sydney, University of Queensland and National Cheng Kung University worked together to assess the entire supply chain of tourism. This includes transportation, accommodation, food and beverages, souvenirs, clothing, cosmetics and other goods.

Green Key Update

As the UAE national operator of Green Key, the team at Emirates Green Building Council has long recognized the importance of building the business case for hotels to participate in the global eco-certification program.  Although cost savings from resource optimization typically leads the financial benefits argument, enhanced brand value from sustainable management, operations and behaviours is also a valuable benefit but can be tricky to validate.

This month we are pleased to announce that Booking.com is testing a feature of highlighting accommodations that are actively working with sustainability – and Green Key awarded establishments are included in the test.
