A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Members and Industry Supporters,

This month the world celebrated International Women’s Day which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.  At Emirates Green Building Council, we are extremely fortunate and proud to have so many women leaders driving our important movement here in the UAE.  These efforts are indeed led by our Vice Chair and Treasurer Habiba Al Marashi, who has not only paved the way for women in sustainability buts has also been instrumental in the regions sustainable development efforts following the establishment of Emirates Environmental Group in 1991, who we are proud to call our partners.

March also marked Earth Hour, a global movement bringing people together with the goal of protecting our planet.  It is pleasing to witness the Earth Hour activities in the UAE, year after year; a testament to the work EmiratesGBC and like-minded organisations are undertaking in the nation to raise awareness on global sustainability issues.

Moving forward, we are eagerly looking forward to the Annual MENA Green Building Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner taking place in Dubai on May 9th, 2018.  EmiratesGBC is proud to host this flagship regional Award, which is now running in its sixth year.  I would like to also take this opportunity to extend our sincere appreciation to our corporate members Majid Al Futtaim, Platinum Sponsor and Jotun Ltd, Gold Sponsor for their support with this year’s Awards.  The 2018 MENA Green Building Awards are endorsed by WorldGBC and in partnership with six MENA Green Building Councils.  I encourage you to book your seats soon. We have had some fantastic entries this year and I look forward to celebrating these successes with you all next month.

Sincerely,

Saeed Al Abbar

Your Green Building Tooltips for April 2018!

This month’s tip:  Use efficient water fixtures only.  Repair all faucet leaks, even if they seem minor, as this can potentially waste hundreds of litres annually.

The EmiratesGBC Green Building Tooltips is a rich online platform serving to further educate the industry and community on simple green building practices.   The interactive designs cover three different building typologies, showcasing a home, school and office building.  The initiative is powered by BASF and Legrand, EmiratesGBC board members underlining their commitment to promoting sustainability.

We strongly urge you to visit the Green Building Tooltips on our website to test out this valuable online tool and fulfil your goal of pursuing a greener lifestyle whether it be at home, school or at the office.

Academy Features of the Month – On Water

This month we look at one of the most pressing issue being faced globally as emphasized in the Global Risks Report 2018 and Cape Town’s crisis: water. The recently published ARUP’s report ‘Cities Alive: Rethinking cities in arid environments’, highlights that cities in arid environment face complex challenges such as water scarcity, inadequate infrastructure, rapidly growing populations, and impacts on public health from the effects of urban heat islands. The report proposes a strategic rethink of how to plan and design cities in arid regions and proposes 36 actions that local governments, planners, architects and investors can consider to support the development of more inclusive, resilient and competitive cities.

In 2017 Majid Al Futtaim Majid Al Futtaim launched its water and carbon Net Positive commitments. In practice this means that by 2040, the organisation will be using as little water as possible and creating more clean water for our communities.  Majid Al Futtaim is continuing its rigorous work towards this goal and we are pleased to share the release of their White Paper, which was developed with the goal of knowledge sharing and inspiring others to join them on their journey.

The paper outlines Majid Al Futtaim’s journey to reduce their water footprint, and suggests a six-point approach which you can follow to develop your water stewardship strategy.

More than just trees, forests are fundamental for food security and improved livelihoods. Forests can increase the resilience of communities by providing food, wood energy, shelter, fodder and fiber, as well as by generating income and employment to allow communities and societies to prosper, and finally by harbouring biodiversity. They can support sustainable agriculture and human well-being by stabilizing soils and climate, and by regulating water flows.  Source
