Dear Members and Industry Supporters,
I would like to start off by congratulating the well-deserving winners of the 2016 Annual EmiratesGBC Awards. The ceremony held last month was well received by industry stakeholders, the local and national press, and was attended by honorable delegates from several government entities including the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, Abu Dhabi UPC, Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, KHDA, DEWA, Dubai RSB, Ajman Tourism and Dibba Municipality to name a few. We also had the honor of hosting WorldGBC CEO Terri Willis who congratulated the Council and the UAE’s leadership for our sustained efforts in policy making and for charting an inspirational course on the path of sustainability for the entire MENA region.
I am pleased to relay here an important announcement that was made during the 2016 Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner, which is the rebranding of the EmiratesGBC Awards to the MENA Green Building Awards starting 2017. We recognize the wealth of innovation and creative thinking fostered in the MENA region with regards to sustainable urban development, and EmiratesGBC with the strong support of the WorldGBC and regional GBCs, will recognize that merit. A region-wide awards program will generate a healthy competitive spirit among green building leaders, and hence, we are looking forward to the applications we receive for next year’s Annual MENA Green Building Awards. Stay tuned for when the application window will open in December.
During the visit of WorldGBC CEO, Terri Willis, the EmiratesGBC held a series of productive and successful meetings with several government and semi-government entities in the UAE. EmiratesGBC and WorldGBC met with representatives from Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Masdar and Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council to discuss potential and promising avenues of joint collaboration.
In the spirit of pioneering initiatives, last month I also had the honor of attending and officially supporting the ‘I LED the Way’ campaign spearheaded by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy. The initiative aims to educate and incentivize UAE residents towards the increased use of energy efficient lights as research numbers consistently show substantial savings achieved through simple lighting retrofits for residential home owners. EmiratesGBC is proud to support yet another initiative which continues the UAE’s path towards sustainability.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Members, Partners and Supporters a Ramadan Kareem.
Best Regards,
Saeed Al Abbar
