A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear EGBC Members and Industry Supporters,

With an increasing demand for knowledge-sharing and capacity building amongst our members, EmiratesGBC has increased its efforts to support technical learning and development. Last month for example, we facilitated Certified Energy Manager (CEM) training as well as LEED GA and LEED AP (BD+C) workshops in partnership with the British University in Dubai. These comprehensive courses provide a good base for technical qualifications and exam preparation, leading to internationally recognized certifications. Our monthly technical workshops also see a growing attendance, and I invite all our members to attend these free sessions in the future which holistically explore technical challenges specific to our region.

We have also reached a major milestone this month in completing the technical content of EmiratesGBC’s Technical Guidelines for Retrofitting Existing Buildings which is now in the final stages of third party review. I would like to thank again all the authors that provided technical expertise in drafting and reviewing chapters of the document as well as the EmiratesGBC Office Team for editing and compiling the document. Having been involved in the preparation of the document, I am excited for the release of the Guidelines which will provide another vital piece to the sustainable building jigsaw in the UAE.  EmiratesGBC is currently looking for sponsors for the Technical Guidelines, which will greatly assist us in increasing the distribution spread of this important document throughout the region.  If you are interested in this exciting opportunity please do contact the EmiratesGBC Office.

Lastly, I would like to encourage all our members to submit their applications for the 2015 EGBC Awards for which the deadline has been extended to March 5th. The last two years of the Awards has really shown the high calibre of innovation taking place in the region and I am looking forward to seeing what this year’s entries will bring.

As always, we welcome any thoughts and suggestions from our Members and Partners so please do get in touch with the EmiratesGBC Office with any ideas to help us in our mission of improving the sustainability of the UAE’s built environment.

Best regards,
Saeed Al Abbar
Chairman

Green Key UAE

EmiratesGBC is coordinating with the Green Key National Jury to review the recommendations of Green Key auditors and validate the certification renewal of over 20 hotels in the UAE.  To be re-certified, these hotels must demonstrate not only that they still comply with the Green Key baseline criteria, but also that they continuously work to improve their green operations and communications to staff and guests.

As of the end of 2014, 24 hotels were Green Key certified in the country. EmiratesGBC is pleased to say that this number will grow in 2015 with a stronger demand from the Hospitality sector to get eco-certified.

To learn more on the Green Key Program and hospitality best practices, or if you wish you support the program and become a Green Key auditor, contact Marie by sending a mail to greenkey@emiratesgbc.org.

A combination of federal support and industry innovation is bringing out new and innovative solar systems into the market, such as BIPV, which are designed to enhance existing onsite renewable energy options.

But how effective is BIPV? To learn more or to have your existing questions answered, please mark your calendar to attend the Dubai session on March 17th from 8:30am – 10:30am and register by emailing technicalworkshops@emiratesgbc.org. Seating is limited, so registration is a must. We look forward to your participation! Please note that participation is exclusive for EmiratesGBC members and partners.
