A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Members and Industry Supporters,

As we make a call to the industry to transition to a zero-carbon future, a concerted focus needs to be made around the large stock of buildings that already exist and their contribution to decarbonisation of the built environment.  In partnership with the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Masdar, I would like to invite industry professionals to register to the EmiratesGBC Building Retrofit Training Programme,  so they can start taking viable steps toward implementing their own retrofit programmes.  The Council is continuing to take big strides in advancing Net Zero principles in the UAE and surrounding region.  We have partnered with the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) to launch ILFI’s Zero Energy (ZE) and Zero Carbon (ZC) Certifications which we have adapted to the UAE Market.  This is an important strategic step for the Council that will further support efforts to transform the United Arab Emirate’s construction industry and to support advanced climate action. I invite you to visit our website to learn more about EmiratesGBC’s Net Zero Centre of Excellence.

Looking ahead, we invite our industry pioneers to apply for the Annual MENA Green Building Awards, this year with a new category for “Zero Building/Zero Building Design of the Year” along with 19 other categories.  I would like to extend my appreciation to Majid Al Futtaim for their support of this pivotal event as Platinum Partner of the awards for 2019.

Lastly, I am pleased to share that I have been confirmed for a second term to sit on the WorldGBC Board of Directors and have also been elected to the Board’s Executive Committee in the role of Treasurer for WorldGBC.  I would also like to extend my warm congratulations to my colleague and EmiratesGBC Vice Chair Khaled Bushnaq who has also been confirmed for a second term to serve as Chair to the WorldGBC MENA Regional Network.  I am pleased that we will continue to champion the Council’s work on both a regional and global level.

Sincerely,

Saeed Al Abbar

EmiratesGBC Green Building Tooltips

Clearing the air is within our control

We encourage you to improve your lifestyle, not just for today but for all of 2019, by adopting an EmiratesGBC Green Building Tooltip.  Under the Home Green Building Tooltips, this month we urge you to consider investing in home building materials that are sourced from natural or sustainable sources and/or have certified low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) content. Building materials which typically contain the highest amount of VOCs are paints, adhesives, coatings, rugs, ceilings, and carpets. Gypsum is another low VOC product that is used extensively toward building construction.  Off-gassing such as formaldehyde, from furniture, carpets, paints, and cleaning products, plus human respiration can create an indoor atmosphere that is a hundred times more polluted than the outdoor environment. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), when emitted from indoor products, can lead to serious health issues including asthma, respiratory diseases, and allergy in children.

The EmiratesGBC Green Building Tooltips is a rich online platform serving to further educate the industry and community on simple green building practices. The interactive designs cover three different building typologies, showcasing homeschool, and office buildings.  The initiative is powered by BASF and Legrand, EmiratesGBC board members underlining their commitment to promoting sustainability, and is supported by Taqati whose mission is tied to achieving Dubai’s sustainability goals.

We urge you to visit the Green Building Tooltips on our website to test out this valuable tool and pursue a greener lifestyle whether it be at home, school or the office.

EmiratesGBC in the News

EmiratesGBC: Retrofitting is crucial for meeting national and global carbon emission targets

As we move closer to global timelines for eliminating carbon emissions by 2050, the building and construction industry has a central role in aligning themselves with these global mandates as the sector is responsible for almost 40%of the world’s carbon emissions. Building retrofitting is an important method for improving energy efficiency of existing buildings, which not only contributes to a more sustainable built environment, but also contributes to the mitigation needed to reduce the building industry’s impact on the climate.

The UAE is taking significant steps in this direction. The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy has set the goal of reducing Dubai’s energy demand by 30 per cent by 2030, and retrofitting existing buildings is an integral part of the strategy. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has invested over $8 billion to retrofit 30,000 buildings, and once complete, it will secure an expected monetary savings of over US$22.33 billion as well as total savings of one million tonnes of carbon dioxide, 5.6bn imperial gallons of water and 1.7 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity by end-2030.

Can retrofits cut construction’s 40% share in global carbon emissions?

Chairman of the UAE’s Emirates GBC, Saeed Al Abbar, thinks the answer is yes – but are builders listening?

Retrofitting could help the UAE cut carbon emissions across under-construction, newly constructed, and existing buildings, according to chairman of Emirates Green Building Council (Emirates GBC), Saeed Al Abbar.

In line with the Gulf nation’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050, new buildings in the UAE should meet be net-zero carbon structures by 2030, and existing buildings should reach that level by 2050.

While the construction industry is responsible for 40% of global carbon emissions, retrofitting could help improve the energy efficiency of existing buildings, the UAE’s state news agency, Wam, reported.

Did you know buildings and construction are responsible for 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions? 28% of these emissions come from the operational “in-use” phase – to heat, power and cool them, while 11% of these emissions are attributed to embodied carbon emissions, which refers to carbon that is released during the construction process, material manufacturing and deconstruction process – the “before-use” and “after-use” phases of a building’s life.
