Dear Members and Industry Supporters,
Last month, 19 global cities, representing 130 million urban citizens, committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by ensuring that new buildings operate at net zero carbon by 2030 by signing the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Declaration. This is a considerable feat which demonstrates our need as nations, industries and individuals to take immediate action to collectively fight climate change.
Highlighting the role of the private sector in leading sustainable development initiatives, these cities have in fact followed the lead of private sector entities who took it upon themselves to sign up to the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Declaration at the World Green Building Council Congress in Toronto back in June. We are very proud that amongst the three pioneering signatories to the Declaration were Majid Al Futtaim, Board Members and strong supporters of the EmiratesGBC. This commitment is a strong statement of the sustainable leadership within the UAE and our own movement.
The Council invites you to read the declaration and we encourage more of our members to join this commitment to radically transform the building and construction industry by spearheading a global shift towards net zero.
EmiratesGBC is championing this global initiative by setting up programs and initiatives to help guide UAE based sustainability leaders to position themselves towards the advancement of net zero carbon buildings. The EmiratesGBC Net Zero Centre of Excellence, a think tank and accelerator to push forward the net zero agenda, is working with stakeholders to ensure the UAE’s trajectory is on track to reach net-zero adoption by the global timeline of 2050.
On October 9th, and in our seventh edition of the Annual EmiratesGBC Congress under the theme “Targeting Zero: a vision for future cities”, we will prompt market readiness for a new wave of demand toward net-zero carbon buildings by engaging in dialogue with leading global and national experts.
With the backing of this year’s venue sponsor, Majid Al Futtaim, I invite your involvement and encourage you to consider supporting this important annual event through sponsorship and registration.
Sincerely,
Saeed Al Abbar

EmiratesGBC urges entities region-wide to commit to net zero carbon buildings
Emirates Green Building Council, EmiratesGBC, an independent forum aimed at conserving the environment by strengthening and promoting green building practices, has called upon all businesses, entities, and cities in the UAE and the region to formally endorse and sign the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment.
Announced globally by the World Green Building Council, WorldGBC, the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment challenges businesses and organisations across the world to take advanced climate action by setting ambitious targets to eliminate operational carbon emissions from their building portfolios by 2030 and to advocate for all buildings to be net zero in operation by 2050.
These targets are set to meet the Paris Agreement ambition of below 2 degrees of global warming. This month, 19 global cities, representing 130 million urban citizens, committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by ensuring that new buildings operate at net zero carbon by 2030.
The commitment’s aim is to generate the next wave of high momentum to cut down global greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and inspire national governments to step up national climate action plans over the next two years.
