A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Members and Industry Supporters,

This past month, EmiratesGBC completed another productive month facilitating collaborative activities for its members. Each event was organized to address the unique issues that either promote or hinder UAE’s sustainability goals.  On April 6th, in cooperation with MEFMA, we held a seminar on Waste Management and investigated the industry’s needs to improve current practices.  Industry professionals invited to the event shared startling statistics about waste and food management rates in the country and proposed viable solutions that have worked for them and around the world. The event was received with high praise from delegates who attended.

On April 25th, EmiratesGBC hosted a Focus Day with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy on the topic of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings.  The panel discussions and case study presentations specified with quantitative examples how nZEBs are not a far-fetched target but a tangible and very realizable goal for the country’s existing and future building stock. The UAE has a unique opportunity to spearhead the way in the future paradigm of sustainable buildings and EmiratesGBC is proud to be at the forefront of hosting discussions on this and other important topics, and I look forward to more Council events which further continue with the discourse.

Finally, if you have not already made your reservations, I invite you to register to attend our Annual EmiratesGBC Awards & Gala Dinner taking place this month on the 18th at the Murooj Rotana, Dubai. This year again, the most sustainable structures, building products and programs will be given much deserved recognition in front of an esteemed audience, including WorldGBC CEO Terri Wills and representatives of the MENA GBC Network. Come join us as we celebrate noble achievements made in the building sector that positively support the goal of environmental preservation.

Best regards,

Saeed Al Abbar
Chairman

Successful Focus Day on Nearly Zero Energy Buildings

Last month, EmiratesGBC teamed up with the  Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry for an engaging and well-attended Focus Day. As Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEBs) are increasingly becoming part of the green building industry discourse in the UAE, this event explored what the ‘n’ in nZEB stands for; highlighted local case studies and discussed what the future holds for nZEBs in the UAE.

Speakers and participants discussed major challenges for nZEB in the UAE including climatic conditions, reduction of plug-in loads, and improvement in human occupant behavior. Despite these challenges, the concept is still viable and achievable given the number of proven and verified worldwide projects. Thank you to our speakers and to Dubai Chamber of Commerce for hosting the successful event.

Hospitality Program Update

On Tuesday April 26th, Sarfraz Dairkee, Secretary to the Board of Directors, represented EmiratesGBC at the 2016 Arabian Travel Market’s seminar on Responsible Tourism. During the session on Environmental Leadership in the UAE, Mr. Dairkee and Gaetan Lavoie, Corporate Director for Technical Services of the TIME hotels, discussed the barriers to wider spread adoption of resource efficiency within the hospitality program.

The need for all stakeholders, including interior designers, architects, contractors, consultants, building operators and owners, to work together towards a common set of goals, instead of in silos, was identified as an important change mechanism. Greater transparency in product representation by suppliers and life cycle accounting were also identified as solutions.

Academy Feature of the Month

With a continuously growing number of hotel rooms in the pipeline, the need to assess, monitor and reduce the UAE hospitality sector’s energy and water consumption is critical to implement the right strategies and reduce its carbon footprint.

The article “Using integrated control methodology to optimize energy performance for the guest rooms in UAE hospitality sector”, written by Fadi AlFarisBassam Abu-Hijleh and Alaa Abdul-Ameer, summarizes a study that was conducted to measure, evaluate and increase the energy efficiency in 4 and 5 star luxury hotels in UAE. Energy benchmarking analysis was used to analyze the energy data of 19 hotel buildings to differentiate between usual and best practice of energy performance.
