Dear Members and Partners

In today’s fast-evolving climate and economic landscape, the financial sector holds a powerful position to accelerate environmental and social sustainability. Financial institutions are uniquely positioned to work closely with clients at every stage of their transition journeys, helping to drive the shift to a low-carbon global economy. By making strategic financing decisions, banks can create real-world impact—reducing emissions not just in their portfolios, but in the broader economy—while supporting sustainable economic growth.

Over the past 3–4 years, the Middle East has seen a significant leap forward in how financial institutions are integrating ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) into their operations. At HSBC and across the banking sector, there has been a notable rise in dedicated sustainable finance teams. Regulatory bodies have intensified efforts around ESG taxonomies and reporting frameworks. Platforms like the Sustainable Finance Working Groups at DIFC and ADGM are further uniting industry voices, not only on traditional finance topics but also on emerging priorities like biodiversity and nature-based solutions.

Supporting the transition to greener buildings and infrastructure is a key opportunity. Achieving net zero by 2050 will require $9.2 trillion in infrastructure investment annually—$3.5 trillion more than current levels. In regions like Asia and the Middle East, this represents over 40% of the global need. Financing decarbonisation across supply chains—from cement to steel—is critical. Locally, the UAE’s Nationally Determined Contribution 3.0 sets ambitious targets, including a 40% reduction in building sector emissions by 2030. Achieving this involves energy-efficient retrofits, sustainable construction materials, and the adoption of renewable energy.

Financial institutions play a crucial role in unlocking these outcomes through sustainable finance instruments aligned with internationally accepted frameworks like the Loan Market Association’s guidelines. These mechanisms enable funding for retrofits, green building design, and more.

Addressing the climate crisis demands unprecedented collaboration between the financial sector and the built environment. Buildings and construction are responsible for a large share of global CO₂ emissions. To stay within the 1.5°C climate target, we must decarbonise the sector through retrofits, efficient new construction, and climate-resilient design. This transformation requires private capital, not just public funds. Green loans and bonds, sustainability-linked loans and bonds, or ESG integration in investment portfolios help drive this shift.

Sustainable buildings often deliver stronger financial performance—lower energy costs, better tenant retention, and higher property values—making them attractive investment assets. Factoring in physical climate risks like heatwaves or flooding further incentivises resilient design. The long lifecycle of buildings makes today’s financial decisions critical for future generations. Working together, financial institutions and policymakers can align incentives, develop supportive policies, and scale innovation in green technologies and materials.

Within the UAE, Emirates Green Building Council is helping to lead this charge. A standout initiative is the UAE Built Environment Blueprint, developed with High-Level Climate Champions and key private sector partners, and co-funded by HSBC. This initiative laid the foundation for the Developers Forum—an industry-wide effort to harmonise sustainability standards in the UAE’s built environment.

To all members and partners of EmiratesGBC: partnerships are essential to unlocking investment, building confidence, and delivering meaningful impact. Together, we can combine technical knowledge, capital mobilisation, and collective ambition to build a sustainable future. Let’s continue to share best practices, raise challenges, and move forward as one united community committed to driving climate action through the built environment.

1. Who You Are:

  • Beyond your professional role, tell us a bit about yourself. What drives and inspires you personally? Whether it’s hobbies, interests, or values, we’d love to learn more about the person behind the professional achievements

Beyond my professional role, I’m a curious and upbeat person who thrives on new experiences and meaningful connections. I love playing board games, get a kick out of making new friends, and am a huge movie buff. I enjoy solving the tiniest of problems with creative business ideas and dream of becoming an entrepreneur someday. I find inspiration in everyday moments and love being around people who think differently. What drives me is the thrill of creativity, human connection, and the belief that even small ideas can spark something big when pursued with purpose.

  2. Career Journey and Achievements:

      • Can you share a brief overview of your career journey in the field of sustainability? What achievements or projects are you most proud of in advancing sustainable practices?

My sustainability journey centres on aligning cost, carbon, and certification to help clients make informed, budget-conscious decisions. I’ve led the development of dashboards and trackers that monitor CAPEX, OPEX, and embodied carbon in parallel—providing transparency and supporting design-to-budget strategies. These tools have addressed key client concerns: integrating carbon with cost to refine design standards; flagging sustainability gaps early through structured credit tracking; and protecting green features during value engineering. With my LEED credentials and focus on data-driven decision-making, I enable projects to meet sustainability goals without compromising on budget or performance.

  1.  3. Challenges and Triumphs:
      • As a woman in the sustainability sector, have you faced any specific challenges, and how did you overcome them? On the flip side, what triumphs or successes have been particularly meaningful in your career?

Navigating a technical, cost-focused industry as a woman advocating for sustainability came with its challenges—especially when integrating environmental priorities into commercial conversations. Early on, I had to work hard to earn trust and demonstrate that sustainability and cost are not competing objectives. Today, I’m proud to be recognized as a trusted advisor for sustainability-related cost uplift decisions and to lead lifecycle costing initiatives across major projects. Clients now actively seek my input to align their ambitions with practical, data-driven strategies—proof that persistence, clarity, and expertise can shift mindsets and drive meaningful change.

  4. Impact and Advice:

      • How do you see your role contributing to the broader goals of sustainability? Additionally, what advice would you offer to other women aspiring to make a difference in the field of sustainability?

I see my role as a catalyst—translating sustainability goals into actionable, cost-effective solutions that drive real change in the built environment. By turning abstract ambitions into clear strategies backed by data, I help projects deliver on both environmental and economic performance. To women in sustainability: your perspective is powerful. Be unapologetically curious, speak up even when it’s uncomfortable, and lead with both conviction and compassion. I’m committed to mentoring and uplifting others, because a more inclusive and informed industry is essential to building a sustainable future for all.
