A Letter from EGBC Family

Dear Members and Industry Supporters,

We’ve now moved into quarter two of this year and I am pleased to look back at a very productive set of months. The Council has actively hosted and supported various industry events and exhibitions, which showcase the rising momentum in awareness and support from all sectors of sustainable design and construction.

Last month, I had the honor of presenting at the 2nd Annual RetrofitTech and also participate at an important roundtable with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and Emirates Wildlife Society on the topic of climate change mitigation and adaptation. In March, EmiratesGBC members also gained privileged access to the Sheikh Zayed Learning Center in Al Ain – the first five pearl design rated building under Estidama, which showcased a number of innovative green building features.

Meanwhile, the discourse clearly rings clear that building sustainability has come a long way over the past years. A few years ago the conversation was dominated by criteria compliance and emerging regulatory frameworks. Today, efforts to promote awareness coupled with technological possibilities have leveraged Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEBs) as a foreseeable goal. On 25 of April, EmiratesGBC will be holding a Focus Day with Dubai Chamber and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy on the topic of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings, which shall hopefully provide the roadmap for how we can move forward into the next paradigm of sustainable buildings.

On the heels of COP21, the calendar pipeline is quickly lining up with more events that will help the Council achieve its vision.   Next month, we will be celebrating the winners at the EmiratesGBC Annual Awards Gala taking place on 18 May 2016. We are proud of the innovative and breakthrough efforts made within the local and regional building industry; and as with past years, the accolades that recipients will be honoured with are indeed well-deserved. If you haven’t reserved your ticket for the awards ceremony, please do so by clicking here.  Also, visit our online calendar to learn more about the events offered by EmiratesGBC for your benefit.

Finally, I welcome you as always to join us and witness the UAE making history as it ambitiously reduces its carbon footprint by tackling the largest emitters: our existing and future buildings

Best regards,

Saeed Al Abbar
Chairman

EmiratesGBC Energy Efficiency Program (EEP) – update!

EmiratesGBC held its first ever town hall style workshop for its Energy Efficiency Program (EEP) members on Tuesday March 29th.  The discourse was facilitated by Etihad ESCO CEO, Stephane Le Gentil.

The event was attended by a diverse range of EEP members including ESCOs, suppliers, manufacturers, consultants and FMCs. During the workshop, participants highlighted the challenges for retrofitting existing residential buildings in Dubai including tenant/owner complex relationship and scattered markets. Solutions were thoroughly discussed to overcome these challenges. Discussions also ranged from suggestions to facilitate the financing and to leverage the non-low-hanging fruit energy efficiency measures (insulation, window replacement, etc..). The event served as an effective platform for Energy Efficiency Program members to network within an industry-focused environment.

Academy Feature of the Month

The Energy Trilemma Index, produced in partnership with global management consultancy Oliver Wyman, along with the Global Risk Centre of its parent Marsh & McLennan Companies, is a comparative ranking of 130 countries, benchmarking the sustainability of energy systems and awarding countries with a balance score, highlighting how well countries manage the trade-offs between the three trilemma goals. Together with its companion, the World Energy Trilemma report, the Index proves an effective tool to assist policymakers as they set climate and development goals, businesses as they set their medium and long-term strategies and investors.

The Index also includes a ‘watch list’, highlighting countries that are expected to display significant changes in trilemma performance over the next few years, in light of recent policy changes, unscheduled incidents or undealt with structural issues. In 2015, South Africa and the US join Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK on negative watch, whilst the Philippines and Serbia are put on positive watch, alongside Mexico and the United Arab Emirates.

Have you had the chance to look at our online Academy page? You’ll find there a series of articles, research papers, case studies, standards and regulations… as well as information on our Technical Guidelines.  Is something missing? Let us know and we’ll fix it!
