Emirates Green Building Council marks Earth Day with screening of ‘Wild Ocean 3D’

APRIL 23, 2013| press release

Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC), an independent forum aimed at conserving the environment by strengthening and promoting green building practices in the UAE, marked Earth Day with a screening of the documentary ‘Wild Ocean 3D’ that highlighted the importance of sustainable development.

The screening was organised in association with Meydan IMAX, Emirates Environmental Group and Emirates Wildlife Society-WWF, and was open for the public. It was attended by more than 500 people, who were given vivid insights into the annual migration of billions of sardines, up the South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Coast, detailing its human impact.

Written, directed, edited and scored by Cresswell and Steve McNIcholas, the documentary offered a fantastic portrait of how sharks, dolphins and man threaten this super-shoal of sardines. It was filmed over two years and is marked by stunning ocean photography.

Adnan Sharafi, Chairman of EmiratesGBC, said: “The screening of the documentary highlights our approach to further strengthen awareness on environmental sustainability among the public. While most of our earlier activities have been industry-oriented, we are now also focusing on end-users and families, to encourage them to become active participants in the sustainable built environment goals that we promote.”

The screening was also marked by an array of activities aimed at further strengthening awareness on the environment, as well as entertainment events. Goumbook distributed free saplings as part of its ‘Plant a Tree’ programme while The Change Initiative conducted a raffle draw providing five winners with copies of their coffe-table book, ‘Alive,’ while Dubai Drums added to the excitement with community drumming sessions.

EmiratesGBC has more than 260 members representing all stakeholders in the building construction supply chain. EmiratesGBC regularly takes part in key conferences and exhibitions to promote sustainable built environments. The Council hosts a dedicated forum, ‘Focus Day’ that discusses various concerns and topics associated with driving sustainability. It also hosts a series of initiatives that facilitates industry dialogue and provides educational resources and information on sustainable practices.
