2018 MENA Green Building Awards – Categories

The 2018 MENA Green Building Awards Program is composed of 19 professional Award Categories.

The description of the Award categories and the requested supporting documentation are presented below.

Ready to apply?


Definition: A completed building in the MENA region whose construction and completion has respected the highest sustainability standards and included innovation in design and processes.

Description: A building completed in 2014 or thereafter in the MENA region that shows excellence in terms of design, construction site management, waste and green standards.

Eligibility: Includes hospitality-related property irrespective of its type (resort, tower, desert camp, hotel apartment…), its location (city, beach, desert), category and star level. Designs and “in progress” projects will not be accepted. The building has been finalized/commissioned/handed-over before the Awards’ submission deadline, i.e. prior to 01 February 2018.

Mandatory submission:

  • 10-page max. synopsis describing the organization leading the building itself (including design plans, contractor implementation and final product), the implemented standards, and key data in relation to these points; official documentation showing proof of the project’s completion.
  • Annex documents: technical documentation to illustrate the information provided in the synopsis.

Eligibility: Includes offices, warehouses, retail, healthcare and other usage which has a commercial component. Designs and “in progress” projects will not be accepted. The building has been finalized/commissioned/handed-over before the Awards’ submission deadline, i.e. prior to 01 February 2018.

Definition: Green design of building in planning or under construction in the MENA region.

Description: Design of a building in the MENA region whose plans, characteristics and drawings respect the highest sustainability standards and include innovation and creativity.

Eligibility: The design has been finalized in 2015 or thereafter in the MENA region and shows excellence in terms of design, site management, regulations/codes and green standards. It takes into account all regulations and sustainability criteria relevant to the location and planned usage of the final building.

Mandatory submission:

  • 10-page max. synopsis describing the design, the organization and team in charge of the project.
  • Annex documents: drawings, certificates and approval from the authorities, working plans with regard to the project’s green components and targets (LEED/Estidama or national equivalent).

Definition: Green design for urban/community development in planning or under construction in the MENA region.

Description: Design of an urban/community development in the MENA region whose master plan, characteristics and drawings respect the highest sustainability standards and include innovation and creativity with respect to its occupants and the surrounding environment.

Eligibility: The design has been finalized in 2015 or thereafter in the MENA region and shows excellence in terms of design, site management, regulations/codes and green standards. It takes into account all regulations and sustainability criteria relevant to the location and planned usage of the development.

Mandatory submission:

  • 10-page max. synopsis describing the design, the organization and team in charge of the project.
  • Annex documents: drawings, certificates and approval from the authorities, working plans with regard to the project’s green components and targets (LEED/Estidama or national equivalent).

Definition: Facility Management (FM) organization for its commitments towards sustainability.

Description: FM organization located in the MENA region which shows excellence in delivering key FM services to its building portfolio and gives sustainability and environmental stewardship a great place in its activities.

Eligibility: FM company based and active in the MENA region. Residential, commercial and industrial properties.

Mandatory submission: 

  • 10-page max. synopsis describing the organization, its portfolio, its activities and its key achievements with regard to sustainability and green standards.
  • Annex documents: any documentation to illustrate the information provided in the synopsis.
  • Commercial documents (marketing brochures, flyers, ads…) will not be considered as relevant materials for this category.

Definition: MENA-based contractor organization whose achievements, professionalism and passion  align with improving the sustainability of the built environment.

Description: MENA based contractor company which demonstrates the highest green standards on project sites and within the company, in compliance with the national and international regulations and codes.

Eligibility: Contractor which is based in the MENA region which has been in operation for at least a year and has already completed projects. The organization holds a valid trade license in the country it operates.

Mandatory submission:

  • 10-page max. synopsis describing the organization.
  • Annex documents: valid trade license; any relevant documents which would complement the synopsis.
  • Commercial documents (marketing brochures, flyers, ads…) will not be considered as relevant materials for this category.

Definition: MENA-based developer whose achievements, professionalism and passion aign with improving the sustainability of the built environment.

Description: MENA-based developer, whether public, semi-private or private, which demonstrates the highest green standards on project sites and within the company, in compliance with the national and international regulations and codes.

Eligibility: Developer which is based in the MENA region which has been in operation for at least a year and has already completed projects. The organization holds a valid trade license in the country it operates. It operates as public, semi-private or private entity in the country it is registered.

Mandatory submission:

  • 10-page max. synopsis describing the organization.
  • Annex documents: valid trade license; any relevant documents which would complement the synopsis.
  • Commercial documents (marketing brochures, flyers, ads…) will not be considered as relevant materials for this category.

Definition: The successful introduction to the MENA region of a construction material or product/component which addresses green building principles.

Description: A material/product/component introduced to the MENA region or a specific location in the region, in 2012 or thereafter, and not previously available in the MENA region, leads to significantly improved sustainability performance over business as usual.

Eligibility: The product has been introduced to the MENA region in 2012 or thereafter and was not previously available on the market. Includes, but is not limited to: HVAC and ventilation equipment, insulation materials, controls, lighting solutions, renewable energy production/management…

Mandatory submission:

  • 10-page max. synopsis describing the organization, the product/material/component and its technical specifications;
  • Annex documents: Verifiable data which supports the claim that the material/product/component was not available in the region (or in a specific location in the region) previously, and that it leads to improved sustainability performance. Verifiable data of significantly improved performance over Business as Usual, including data sheets, EPD, testing results and certificates.
  • Commercial documents (marketing brochures, flyers, ads…) will not be considered as relevant materials for this category.

  • Commercial documents (marketing brochures, flyers, ads…) will not be considered as relevant materials for this category.

Definition: Research that establishes dependable data, in an area not previously available, related to green building performance.

Description: Research should deal with the performance of materials, components, equipment or completed buildings and should be applicable to MENA region. It should provide replicable verified data which can be used by the industry in the further development of green buildings. Academic-style research is expected, i.e. research projects to test specific products/systems might not be eligible.

Eligibility: Applicable to the MENA region, verifiable and duplicable data that validates the research outcomes. Organizations which conduct testing and research on products might not be eligible; it remains at the discretion of the Office or the Awards Committee to assess whether such an organization’s application fulfills the requirements and can be presented to the Judging Panel.

Mandatory submission:

  • 10-page max. synopsis describing the organization developing the research, the details of the research (= paper), verifiable data, its aims and outcomes.
  • Annex documents: the entire research itself and its annex files.

Definition: The successful implementation and achievements of a retrofit project on a building in the MENA region.

Description: Retrofit project of an existing building in the MENA region (irrespective of its operational purpose, date of opening and location) that contributed to significant energy/water savings, improved IAQ and contributed to making the building greener. The winning submission will not only be selected based on the level of energy/water savings only; the project will be assessed in its entirety.

Eligibility: The retrofit project has been finalized in 2014 or thereafter in the MENA region. Verifiable data which provides numbers at least a year before the implementation of the project itself and verifiable data at least a year after the implementation and completion of the project.

Mandatory submission:

  • 10-page max. synopsis describing the organization in charge of the retrofit work, and presentation of the work itself including pre/post-project data and conclusions.
  • Annex documents: pre/post project data and pictures to illustrate the nature, objectives and conclusions of the work.

Definition: The successful implementation of a green Operations and Maintenance plan conducted by an organization which has led to reducing waste generation, improving efficiency and increasing well-being.

Description: The most successful Operations and Maintenance plan implemented in an operating building in the MENA region.

Eligibility: The Operations and Maintenance plan has been implemented to maintain best environmental performance of an operating building in the MENA region. It has been implemented by either a public, semi-private or private organization within the building it operates and supported by proper long-term policies, strategies, trainings and verification.

Mandatory submission: 

  • 10-page max. synopsis describing the organization managing the Operations and Maintenance plan, the buildings’ characteristics, the Operations and Maintenance plan itself and its key components (baseline, goals, achievements…), and relevant strategy related and verifiable data that illustrate the successful implementation of the plan.
  • Annex documents: valid trade license, certificates, testimonials; any relevant documents which would complement the synopsis.

Definition: Best sustainability training initiative in the MENA region.

Description: The introduction of training to improve the understanding of sustainability issues in the construction industry, or in the segment of the construction industry in which the company operates.

Eligibility: An organization (public, private and Academia sectors) which implemented training initiatives, internally (staff, management) or to the attention of the public (community development) or other professionals in the MENA region. The initiative took place in 2017 or thereafter and addressed topics relevant to the construction industry and/or green buildings-related topics. It remains at the discretion of the Office or the Awards Committee to assess whether a submitted training fulfills the eligibility requirements and can be presented to the Judging Panel.

Mandatory submission: 

  • 10-page max. synopsis describing the organization, the training initiatives (content, attendance, outcomes).
  • Annex documents: verifiable data on the course(s), their content, their implementation and their internal coverage.
