Lora Shrake | Director

Lora ShrakeLora has fifteen years of project management experience in the United States, Middle East and the GCC region. Her background in environmental science has been applied through work in the academic, technical/consulting, and private/semi-government sectors where her focus has encompassed environmental education and outreach, natural resource conservation, environmental management and sustainable development.

Over the course of her career, she has been responsible for the management of environmental research projects and applying their findings to problem-solve local and regional water quality issues; implementing environmental outreach programs for varying audiences; overseeing environmental, social and sustainability aspects of large-scale development projects in the Middle East; and contributing to stakeholder management and corporate social responsibility programs. Lora’s enthusiasm for conserving and protecting our natural resources is ingrained in her commitment to promoting a sustainable built environment.


Adelita Cortenias | Administrative Officer

Adelita has developed her career enthusiastically in the field of Administration in the UAE since 1992. For more than twenty years of service she has obtained substantial experience in many aspects of administrative functions in line with General Office Management, Personal Assistance, Finance, Purchase & HR related works, Business Operation/Process, coordination, documentation as well as logistics. She has an ability to relate among various disciplines and effectively deal with local & international backgrounds. Her educational attainment in Degree of Industrial Engineering influences her character to uphold her principle to achieve excellent work efficiency and quality output. She has also been involved and specialized in development, implementation and control of system & procedures. With matured role, she works with a high degree of responsibility, confidentiality and appropriate judgment. Her loyalty and efforts have been proven contributions to the success of the organizations she is associated with.


Sheena Khan | Program Manager – Education

Sheena is Canadian-Trinidadian and has called Dubai her home for the past 9 years. After beginning her career in market research, she made the jump into the field of sustainability.  She was a member of The Change Initiative’s founding management team that achieved the highest LEED Platinum CI rating in the world for the headquarters. She went on to establish the Community Green Building Education Program where her passion for raising awareness for sustainability in the built environment was inculcated.

Sheena holds undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Business from the University of Western Ontario and the Richard Ivey School of Business respectively and a graduate Certificate in Sustainability from Harvard University Extension School.  She is a LEED Green Associate.


Bilal Maarouf | Senior Technical Engineer

Bilal is a Mechanical Engineer specialized in resources efficiency and sustainability in buildings and cities. He is an advocate of urban sustainability and works towards enhancing the knowledge capacity of the industry and academia alike. Bilal has worked on numerous green building certification projects complying with local, regional and international codes.

He has delivered bespoke research to various clients on advanced topics such as Urban Energy Systems, Smart Cities, ICT in Energy, Solar Thermal Cooling, Integrated Energy and others. His experience also includes complex multidisciplinary projects comprising of teams spread across different geographies.

Bilal holds a Master’s Degree in Energy with Distinction from Heriot Watt University and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the American University of Sharjah. He is a LEED AP O+M, Estidama PQP, and Autodesk BPAC.


Maha Khogali | Communications & Stakeholder Engagement Officer

Maha is an experienced communications professional, with both a strong academic background and exceptional analytical skills that give her unique insights into communications in the Middle East.

Prior to joining Emirates Green Building Council, Maha spent seven and a half years honing her communications experience; this included representing Energy & Environment clients in the MENA region within the PR field, consulting for an entertainment agency as well as managing programming and content for a leading radio station in North Africa.

It is her three years’ experience as a media analyst at one of the Middle East’s leading market research firms at the launch of her career, which has ensured Maha employs a methodical approach and particular deliberation when it comes to the communications process.

Maha holds a BA in Psychology from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon and an MA in Media & Communications from Goldsmiths College (University of London) in the UK.


Jason John | Technical Analyst

Jason is an award winning Material Science Masters graduate from Queen Mary University of London. He received the Best Materials Student Award and the International Science and Excellence Award for all years of completed study. He constantly strives for quality and excellence and challenges himself to outperform expectations.

Jason’s interest in sustainability comes from his experience from his research projects. He worked on two cutting edge research projects that were aimed at sustainability: Energy Harvesting using piezoelectrics and Water Splitting using Solar thin films. As such, he has a keen understanding of the needs to improve the global energy demands through active practical research.

Jason believes in continuous improvement and thus his strengths lie in research and development, analysis and report writing. He values and enjoys learning and is always eager to build his knowledge and skills.
